About Me
I am a UKCP registered Family and Systemic Psychotherapist and Systemic Supervisor and have worked for many years in a variety of settings including adult and child mental health within the NHS; criminal justice organisations; and within the social care sector of a local authority. I have experience in facilitating multi-family therapy groups as well as running groups for both adults and young people; and working with couples, individuals and families of all ages.
What is Family Therapy?
In family therapy, relationships are thought to form a key part of the emotional health of each member within that family. It is not surprising therefore, that families and those in close relationships sometimes get into difficulties due to their differences; or feel the strain when loved ones have troubles.
The systemic approach helps family members work together to find ways of overcoming distress, misunderstanding or pain affecting their relationships and putting a strain on the family unit- much like how different parts of the human body work together to help heal a broken bone or fight an infection. It is sensitive to diverse family forms, respecting the importance of each persons’ beliefs, culture and life experiences, making it a useful approach for people of all ages and backgrounds. Emma has a particular interest in attachment trauma and how this impacts on relationships and emotional wellbeing.
Family Therapy can help families and individuals to:
- Gain a better understanding of how their family functions
- Identify strengths and weaknesses within the family system
- Set goals and devise strategies to resolve problems
- Develop their communication skills
